“Dalzavod” has modernized and repaired the “Marshal Gelovani” vessel
The “Dalzavod” Ship Repair Center”, which is a part of the Far Eastern Shipbuilding and Ship Repair Center (FESRC), has carried out the repair and modernization of the “Marshal Gelovani” hydrographic vessel, which will go on an expedition to the South Pole of the Earth in the framework of celebrating the 200th anniversary of the Antarctica discovery and the 250th anniversary of Admiral Ivan Kruzenshtern birthday.
Extensive work on the repair and modernization of the “Marshal Gelovani” vessel went on for about two years. During this time, the hull structures, the hull underwater part, the propeller-steering complex, the davit, etc., were repaired. The electric power system of the vessel: diesel generators and switching equipment underwent complete repair. The hydrographic vessel has been equipped with a new radar station, and xenon lighting equipment, the illumination range of which is over 12 km, and alsothe vessel hasbeen equipped with high-speed boats.
The modernization also done on the vessel interior. Major repairs were made in the cabins and office accommodation quarters, new life support systems (desalination and air conditioning units) were installed. The old wooden deck covering at “Marshal Gelovani” was completely replaced with a special non-slip material that protects the vessel hull structures from corrosion.
All workshops of “Dalzavod” were involved in the repair work. Thanks to the high professionalism of the staff of the turbodiesel workshop, “Marshal Gelovani” left the quay walls of “Dalzavod” on time.
On the way to Antarctica, the hydrographic vessel “Admiral Vladimirsky” and the oceanographic research vessel “Yantar” will join “Marshal Gelovani”. After arriving at the South Pole, the expedition will conduct scientific research for more than two months: extensive hydrographic work in the Bellingshausen Sea, as well as clarification of the location of the South Magnetic Pole in the D’Urville Sea.
